Modern windows serve for illumination, aesthetics and energy saving in the room. Manufacturers, taking into account the importance of this element of the building, present a wide variety of windows of all sizes and styles. But in order to perform the functions properly, the structure must fit well to the window opening or must be installed in the opening taking into account the technological gap and this directly depends on the correct measurements.
Let's figure out how to determine the size of windows in a private house. How to define the parameters? Is it possible to avoid unnecessary trouble by ordering standard windows?

Standard and non-standard sizes of plastic frames
Today plastic windows can have different sizes, but all of them are divided into two categories: standard and non-standard. Characteristics of a standard-size window:
- defined, unchanging width and height;
- divided into parts some of which may have a leaf with of without the opening;
- the leaf opens only in a specifically defined way and direction.
Plastic windows can have non-standard sizes. They usually include any type of frame created according to the individual wishes of the customer and the size of the window openings in the apartment or house. Atypical structures usually are more expensive.
Typical (standard) windows are PVC structures. Their parameters are most popular. You can find them in old buildings where the windows and doors are of the same size.
There are no requirements for window sizes, but were established standards of their area: in residential buildings, the area of window and floor must be 1:8, and for non-residential buildings (if according to the law they require daylighting) - 1:12 (paragraph 57.2 of "Technical conditions for buildings and their location" (Decree of the Minister of Infrastructure dated 04.12.2002). Such requirements are intended to ensure natural lighting at an appropriate level in terms of hygiene and human health.
Pay attention! Since the parameters of typical windows are not determined by law, each manufacturer has its own size grid or features of such "typical" structures. For example, for a single-leaf window the manufacturer can show prices as for a structure in the size of 50 × 100 cm and for a double-leaf window the prices are as for the structure in the size of 150 × 150 cm. Also note that the price is usually indicated with the minimum configuration: a single glazed window, with a plastic profile of the economy class and ordinary hardware. That is why, when you compare several offers, be interested not only in the price, but also in the appearance, composition of the structures. Specify the dimensions of the plastic windows to avoid misunderstanding.
Typical windows guarantee the sufficient lighting in accordance with specified standards. Nuances are possible only when you order smaller windows. However, as practice shows, most customers, on the contrary, seek to increase the area of glazing, especially in rooms such as a bedroom or kitchen. In this way, more light gets inside and the room looks fresher and more spacious.
Today, manufacturers and customers of uPVC windows still use the mentioned classification. Although it is rather conditional and serves as a tribute to the past. Nevertheless it is convenient for everyday use and mutually understandable for the parties.
So, let's talk about what are the typical sizes of windows.
Standard window sizes
The concept of "standard" appeared in the days when wooden windows were used . In the 1980s it began to be associated with PVC structures.
In order to simplify the manufacturing process and reduce the cost of products, craftsmen developed ready-made window structures of fixed sizes which were divided into leaves with a limited list of opening functions. In such a case it was impossible to change something.
This is how plastic windows got the dimensions that later became standard. They were based on the most popular window parameters of that time. Over time, "typical windows" (typówka) for facades and balconies were legislated in the industry standard as BN-85/7153-02.
The most popular standard window sizes are double leaf of 1165 x 1135 mm and 1465 x 1435 mm and single-leaf of 865 x 1135 or 1435 mm.
Standard sizes of windows are mostly popular among developers of apartment buildings or office buildings. Because the typicality of windows allows them to reduce the price of their purchase and the cost of a new building.
The owners of private houses are less likely to choose standard windows. Statistics show:s that five years ago about 50-60% of homeowners preferred standard windows and now their share has decreased to 10%.
The explanation is simple. The size of the windows in a private house is determined by the architect while designing the building. He takes into account the wishes of the owners, parameters and shape of the future building. In these cases very often are used original, non-standard solutions which are implemented with the help of modern technologies. That is why the need for typical structures gradually disappears.
Did you know? If you choose a ready-made house project, but construction has not yet started, you can ask the designer or architect to change the window size. Such a change is considered insignificant and does not require additional coordination with the controlling authorities.
While planning windows, do not forget that their dimensions also affect the complexity of installation and cost of window hardware. The more non-standard the structure is, the higher the price of its installation. Warm window installation will cost much more.
What are the sizes of home windows?
The size of the windows in the household is directly affected by their type. In single-family houses, are usually found the following types of windows:
- facade (most of them);
- roof;
- balcony;
- patio.
They differ in form, purpose and sometimes even in manufacturing materials. The last parameter also affects the dimensions, because, for example, wooden structures can deform under the influence of solar heat or low temperatures.
Let's look at the most popular sizes for other types of home windows.
Is there a standard size for roof windows?
The roof window is installed as a special element in the roof structure. That is why it must withstand the same load as the entire roof. This is its main difference from other types of windows, which directly affects the material and parameters.
Roof windows can have different sizes, but the most common are:
- 55 cm х 87 cm;
- 55 cm х 98 cm;
- 66 cm х 98 cm;
- 66 cm х 118 cm;
- 78 cm х 98 cm;
- 78 cm х 118 cm;
- 78 cm х 160 cm;
- 94 cm х 140 cm;
- 114 cm х 118 cm.
Important! Roof windows are sized depending on the slope of the roof. The steeper it is, the shorter the glazing will be. For example, a slope of 35 degrees allows a hole length of about 1600 mm, while at 70 degrees the maximum length is 1200 mm. At the same time, the width of roof windows directly depends on the distance between the rafters and is defined at the stage of project documentation.
Sizes of balcony windows
Balcony windows are mostly of one size in apartment buildings, because it is more convenient for the developer. In single-family houses they differ in terms of parameters according to the project and size of the building.
Their main feature is a larger size compared to the standard facade windows. At the same time, balconies should provide sufficient air exchange and keep the heat inside the room.
Balcony windows are most often found:
- Single-leaf : 865 mm x 2095 mm, 865 mm x 2195 mm, 865 mm x 2295 mm.
- Double-leaf: 1465 mm x 2085 mm, 1465 mm x 2185 mm, 1465 mm x 2285 mm, 1765 mm x 2085 mm, 1765 mm x 2185 mm, 1765 x 2285 mm.
Sizes of patio windows
Patio windows (or whole structures) look attractive and give the house a stylish and modern look. It is difficult to talk about typicality in this case, because the parameters of glazing are individual for each building. They are usually no wider than 3 meters and no higher than 2.5 m. In addition, the length of the entire structure on the terrace should not exceed 6.5 m, otherwise it will negatively affect its reliability and thermal insulation. This limitation does not depend on the manufacturer of glazing, but is dictated by the production technology.
How to submit the size of the window?
Correct sizes of the opening play a decisive role in creating a glazing for your needs. If the manufacturing company of PVC structures provides services for determining the size of the window opening, it is better to use them.
If measurements are taken by the owner of the house, remember that it is necessary not only to make measurements, but also to submit them correctly.
Important! At first indicate the width and only then the height. For example, the size 780 x 980 means that the width of the window is 780 mm and the height is 980 mm. At the same time, even if the window is horizontal (so its width is greater than its height), the width is still indicated first.
The generally accepted unit of measurement in this case is millimeters (mm), not centimeters (cm).
At first glance, such information seems insignificant, but in practice such inaccuracies often lead to the manufacture of incorrect structures that cannot be installed in the planned opening.
Thanks to modern technologies, standard window sizes are losing their relevance. Owners of single-family houses no longer have to limit themselves. If you wish, you can realize any idea in the project, your own vision of a comfortable home. The price of such non-standard solutions fluctuates, but our company does everything possible so that the cost of windows does not depend on the size and would be focused on the needs of customers.
Make sure yourself! Simply go to the configurator, specify the parameters and calculate the approximate cost of the window online.
